If you follow the old Holloway to the very bottom of the lane, you'll find a tangled hedge of honeysuckle, its stems so heavy with flowers that they bow down to the roadside. The sweet fragrance carries through the air for miles, calling in bumble bees from all across the countryside.
When I was little I would enjoy watching the bees dance amongst the blossoms. On one particular occasion I'm almost certain I spotted one clutching the tiniest little basket, filled to the brim with summer's treasures. I stared for as long as I could, I couldn't quite believe my eyes, but before I could take a closer look, it slipped into the shadows and disappeared through a tiny crack in the old stone wall.
For years, I've never quite known whether it was something I truly saw or simply something my childhood imagination dreamt up. But today I found myself standing there once again, watching the bees dance amongst the honeysuckle. I waited quietly for a while, half hoping, half expecting, to catch another glimpse of one, basket in hand, hurrying home.
